We know you have been stuck at work for weeks or maybe months but, your mind has been planning a big fat holiday for a long time. There’s so much you haven’t explored yet, so what are you waiting for?

With Christmas break around the corner, it’s time to load up your car and hit the highway. But wait, is your car ready for the road trip? Think about it again!

Don’t let car trouble ruin your holiday trip. Performing a few tasks such as cleaning/repairing oil filter systems, investigating low oil pressure, and checking brakes can save you from a disaster.

So, here are some tips to help you get started;

Top up fluids:

Car’s fluid is the lifeblood of your vehicle. Get them checked properly, including engine oil, power steering, and transmission fluids, and windshield washer fluid. If any of them are low, ask the technician to top them off before hitting the road.

Your radiator’s antifreeze does not need replacing every year, but some mechanics may suggest it. So, ask the mechanic first to test the fluid using a coolant hydrometer. It is good if you can check the coolant level yourself. If you need to top up, it is better to use a 50/50 mixture for best boil-over protection.

Check your battery:

The most important thing is to make sure that your battery is also thoroughly checked. Although you should be doing that every second month, so don’t miss it before a road trip.

To avoid being stranded because of a drained or corroded battery, make sure to get it tested and if your battery is over three years old, replace it with a new one.

Also, check battery cables to ensure they’re securely attached to the terminals. If there are signs of corrosion, disconnect cables to clean hidden areas where they contact battery terminals.

Oil maintenance:

Getting the right oil for the trip can be critical, but you don’t have to be a car expert to know when to change your vehicle’s oil. The recommended interval for an oil change was 3,000 to 5,000 miles but now many mechanics recommend getting it changed every 7,500 to 10,000 miles.

Don’t miss out on the signal of low oil pressure as it can affect your engine’s performance and damage its components. Ask your mechanic to properly check the oil pressure because it can leak in the supply lines, taking away all your oil through tiny holes.

If you are road tripping in the spring or summer, it’s important to remember that higher temperatures require higher oil viscosity, which only a full synthetic oil can provide. Especially if you have an old car, it is advised to upgrade it to a heavier oil as most new vehicles run fine throughout the year on the same viscosity oil.

So, make sure you don’t miss car oil maintenance at any cost.

Don’t miss out on tires:

Don’t let tire inflation affect your car’s fuel efficiency. Make sure to check the tire pressure before leaving for your trip. Also, don’t forget to check the pressure on the car’s spare tire, as it can create huge trouble if any one of your tires goes flat.

Brakes can be a game-changer:

Brakes provide the friction you need to stop the car. If they are not working properly, changing the oil filter system, tire pressure, or any other thing will not count. Get them checked or replace the brake pads if they are making any noise to secure yourself from accidents during the road trip.

Clean up:

Since you have to spend significant time in your car, it is highly crucial to keep it clean and pleasant before hitting the road. Traveling in a smelly car can be an awful experience so pay close attention to your car’s interior, specifically floor mats, storage area, and under the seats, re-arrange anything if needed.

And finally, Give the exterior of your car a final wash before you leave.

So, don’t wait anymore; book an appointment with Eric’s car care and get all your things sorted for a perfect road trip. You never know, you might win a Nintendo Switch too. Happy Holidays!
